FYI, I found out that you both need to have 10 posts and have a registered username for 7 days before you'll automatically be switched to the regular user group and therefore be able to PM. This actually makes a lot of sense, since the purpose of having a separate group for new users was to weed out spam (we were being flooded with it before Ruby changed the settings), and a lot of the spam was being sent via PM. I'm guessing most spammers (or robots) wouldn't sit around at the same forum for 7 days waiting to PM people!

Yeah, for awhile there the spam was a modly nightmare. Ban a username and they (or it, for the spam bots) come back with another; ban an IP address and they come back on another; ban a whole block of IP addresses (which we almost never do), and they come back on a different subnet. Now, we'll still get an occasional spammer, but someone's almost guaranteed to report the post right away and we can get them banned. The changes were a brilliant move on Ruby's part

That said, if any legitimate new members (i.e. you've at least posted an intro that didn't include links to your product and/or porn site) want to be bumped up to the regular usergroup before the 7 days are over, let me know.
