What's the evidence for this? What toxins does it remove?
I fully believe that eating fruit is healthy and will give you more energy and better skin, but the whole detox thing drives me up the wall.
Our bodies have kidneys to remove toxins. Until someone shows me evidence that acai berries (et cetera) improve kidney function or evidence that specific toxic chemicals are being excreted in other ways, I'll think they're a load of rubbish.
Think about it. How would drinking juice remove toxins from the bloodstream?!
Celebrity endorsement does not make sound science. Clinical trials do, not trials of Oprah's viewers.

Lonelyandgone, I want to be clear I'm not attacking YOU. I just think these products are awful, because they seduce people with claims that sound vaguely plausible, but are based on nothing.

Doesn't increasing the volume of fluid improve the kidney function? (assuming the volume of fluid is not excessive)

A few studies that may be worth looking at:

Berry fruits: compositional elements, biochemical activities, and the impact of their intake on human health, performance, and disease.

Antioxidant, mutagenic, and antimutagenic activity of frozen fruits.

Comparison of chemical and cell-based antioxidant methods for evaluation of foods and natural products: generating multifaceted data by parallel testing using erythrocytes and polymorphonuclear cells.

In vitro and in vivo antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacities of an antioxidant-rich fruit and berry juice blend. Results of a pilot and randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover study.

Correlation between antioxidant activity and bioactive compounds of açaí (Euterpe oleracea Mart) comercial pulps.

It's been in the news a lot recently but there is still no evidence that acai has anything any other berry doesn't have. It's all just marketing hype because people can get rich making stuff up and selling it. Here's a story I read 2 days ago on CNN:
Group challenges acai berry weight-loss claims
Quote:
"Virtually every berry -- blueberry, strawberry, goji, acai -- are anti-inflammatory and high in antioxidants," Bowden said. "This particular one is exotic. It's found in Brazil. It's been marketed to have more of a magic ingredient. It's been over-hyped and marketed to death. There are claims to curing cancer, curing baldness that is all over the place."

Like most berries, acai has good nutritional qualities, but "there is not a drop of research" that supports marketing claims that it prevents weight gain and facial wrinkles, Bowden said.

Acai juices sell for as much as $40 per bottle.
Quote:
After a doctor listed acai as a healthy food on the Oprah Winfrey show last year, and a guest on Rachael Ray's cooking show mentioned the fruit, ads popped up directing consumers to sites selling acai weight loss products as if endorsed by the celebrities. Winfrey and Ray have publicly disassociated themselves from those sites.
Quote:
"There are no magical berries from the Brazilian rain forest that cure obesity, only painfully real credit card charges and empty weight loss promises," Blumenthal said. "Aggressive acai berry pitches on the Internet entice countless consumers into free trials promising weight loss, energy and detoxification. These claims are based on folklore, traditional remedies and outright fabrications unproved by real scientific evidence."
Again my motto; If it sounds too good to e true it probably is.

It's a supplement of a berry, not some weird combination of strange herbs that could react in some weird way, so it's pretty safe. I found it at seacoastvitamins.com. You can also get Acai Berry teas that would probably help with weight loss (because you're drinking and benefiting from the acai).

The acai berry diet has to be accompanied by regular exercise and better eating habits so that the diet will produce optimum results. But when you buy them don't get ripped off with price and quality. Beware of fake products and getting over charged

I'm not sure what disturbs me more, the willingness of people to part with cash in order to lose weight, or the fact that the scammers selling this stuff are POSTING on our forum!^^

DO NOT fall for the online scams, no fruit juice is worth that amount of money. Just go to Holland and Barrett/GNC/Nature's Bounty and buy the juice or capsules. It's a berry juice- the best thing it has is antioxidants, amino acids, fatty acids and some vits/mins. That's all, nothing magical. It is healthy for you, like pomegranate or blueberry or flaxseed oils, that's all. You won't lose weight. Oh and it tastes like shit (think tree sap).
